2. Safar

Share
This is the second month of Islamic calendar. This word Safar means "whistling of the wind". When this name was assigned to this month, it was probably a windy time of the year. As mentioned earlier, most of the months were named according to weather conditions at the time.

This literally means ‘empty’named because of the emptying (isfar) of Makkah (i.e., its people would all leave) when they travelled during this month. But it has also been said that most Islamic months are given names based on the seasons. One thing we’re sure of is that the ideology behind his month is the time when the Arabs set out of their homes to fight their enemies.

Misconception:

This time of the year was considered to be cursed as many catastrophes and calamities took place. However this belief has been proven to be false and totally without foundation (absurd).

It was believed in pre Islamic period that this time of the year brings mishaps and other disasters. The Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) was quoted by Hazrat Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) to have said about this fallacy

“I have heard the Prophet saying, the descending of illness and evil superstition befalling in the month of Safar is untrue.” (Muslim)

This can also be confirmed by the following hadeeth

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: "(There is) no 'Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah's permission), nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any (bad omen in the month of) Safar, and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion." (narrated by al-Bukhari, 5387; Muslim, 2220)

While in Safar there’re even such as , the beloved Daughter Fatima(May Allah be pleased with him) of Prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him) got married with Hazrat Ali (May Allah be pleased with im). Beside the wedding there’re two battles of Abwaa and Khaibar took place on 2 A.H and 7 A.H in Safar respectively. Also Khubaib Ibn Adney and Zaid Ibn Dathina (May Allah be pleased with them) were martyred in this month in the year 4 A.H. in Mecca.
